This page will explain how to successfully complete platform-maps-blur-submission jobs as a BLUR Worker. BLUR integrates with Amazon Mechanical Turk and it is assumed that workers are eligible workers from Mechanical Turk (MT) and have undergone whatever processes are required to become an eligible MT worker.

BLUR Worker Dashboard

First Steps

First you must create a free worker account to access the BLUR Worker Dashboard. The dashboard is how all of the jobs are managed and also where your job completion codes (same as HIT codes per Amazon parlance) will be found.

Getting Started

Once you've created a worker account you can access BLUR jobs and begin getting paid to perform simple tasks which involve both submitting requests to mapping platform providers Google, Apple, and Microsoft, as well as verifying actions that the platforms take in response to the reqeusts.

BLUR Worker Dashboard Job

The Jobs

Each job has a specific time that it must be completed in, otherwise it will be automatically unassigned and moved back into the queue for other workers to access. The completed by date/time is clearly labeled on each expanded job detail. Further all required details to complete the job are shown in the detail as well. In the example above, the requirements are both "street address" and "email address" of which will be used to perform the job to "Report Inappropriate Street View" on Google maps and more specifically to request that the address in question be blurred for privacy. Each mapping platform has their own specific requirements for submitting these requests and here is the list of instructions for each of them:

Instructions for completing a BLUR maps platform submission job for Google are shown below. You can also find these instructions and detailed steps for all supported platforms at the links above.

Click the street view thumbnail photo

1. Navigate to the Street View Thumbnail

First, use any method you prefer (Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Street View Mobile App, etc.) to navigate to the provided street address. Once there, click on the street view thumbnail photo.

Click "Report a problem" on Google Maps Street View

2. Click "Report a Problem"

Next, click the "Report a problem" link on the Google Maps Street View page. This will open the "Report Inappropriate Street View" web form.

Fill out the "Report Inappropriate Street View" form correctly

3. Fill Out the Form Accurately

When filling out the "Report Inappropriate Street View" form:

  • Make sure to completely circle the house located at the provided street address.
  • Check the box certifying that you are authorized to request the blurring of the property.

Note: BLUR has obtained authorization from the property owner or tenant to request the blurring. As a worker, you are submitting this request on their behalf. The property owner also understands that the blurring is permanent and has consented to this action.

4. Submit the Form

Use the address provided in the BLUR dashboard as the email input field, and then submit the form. Google will send a confirmation receipt to the provided email address. Once you receive this confirmation, a completion code will appear in the job details area of the BLUR dashboard.

And that's it! It's that simple.
